Why people look for Claude Code alternatives
Claude Code is one of the strongest terminal agents, but it comes with trade-offs that push people to look elsewhere:
- No free tier. Claude Code needs Claude Pro ($20/month) or higher, or an Anthropic API key.
- Claude only. It runs Anthropic’s models and nothing else, so you can’t switch to GPT, Gemini or a local model for cheaper tasks.
- Closed source. You can extend it, but not read, audit or fork the agent itself.
- Usage limits. Subscription plans have usage limits that reset over time, so heavy users hit them or move to the $100 and $200 Max plans.
The catch: your Claude subscription stays in Claude Code
If your plan is to keep Claude but switch tools, know this first. A Claude Pro or Max subscription can’t legitimately be used in other coding agents. OpenCode’s provider documentation says plugins exist to do it but that “Anthropic explicitly prohibits this”. OpenCode stopped bundling them as of version 1.3.0.
So moving to another agent means one of three things:
- Pay per token with an Anthropic API key in an open agent like OpenCode or Cline.
- Use a tool whose own plan includes Claude, such as GitHub Copilot (from $10/month) or Kiro (from $20/month, plus a free tier with Claude Sonnet 4.5).
- Switch model families to OpenAI (Codex), open-weight or local models.

The alternatives in more detail
OpenAI Codex. The most direct rival: a terminal agent, IDE extensions (VS Code, Cursor, Windsurf, JetBrains, Xcode), a mode in the ChatGPT desktop app, and a cloud agent that opens pull requests. It’s included in ChatGPT plans, from limited use on Free and Go to full access on Plus ($20/month). The CLI is Apache-2.0 open source and can run local models. Full comparison: Claude Code vs Codex.
OpenCode. An MIT-licensed terminal agent with a desktop app (beta) and IDE integration. It works with 75+ providers, local models through Ollama, LM Studio or llama.cpp, and existing ChatGPT Plus/Pro or GitHub Copilot subscriptions. Claude works through an Anthropic API key. An optional Go plan ($10/month) covers a curated set of open coding models.
GitHub Copilot. Copilot works inside VS Code, JetBrains IDEs, Visual Studio, Xcode, Neovim and more, and has its own CLI and a cloud agent that works on GitHub issues. Pro ($10/month) includes Claude models, among them Claude Opus 5.5 and Sonnet 5.5, alongside OpenAI and Google models, all metered in GitHub AI Credits. On Pro+ ($39/month) you can also delegate tasks to third-party coding agents, including Claude by Anthropic (in preview).
Cline. An open-source (Apache-2.0) agent for VS Code and JetBrains IDEs, with a CLI and desktop app. It asks for approval before acting, which suits people who find autonomous agents too hands-off. Bring any provider’s API key, use local models, or pay as you go through Cline’s provider.
Kiro. AWS’s IDE writes a spec (requirements, design, tasks) before coding. Its credits cover Claude Opus 5.5, Sonnet 5.5 and GPT-5.6, so you keep Claude without an Anthropic subscription. See Claude Code vs Kiro.
Zed. A fast, open-source editor with a built-in agent. The free plan works with your own API keys, local models, and external agents through the Agent Client Protocol.
Cursor. A polished AI editor, but its plans now include only Cursor’s own Grok and Composer models. Claude costs extra at API list price on Premium ($30/month) and above. See Claude Code vs Cursor.
What about Gemini CLI? It used to be the go-to free alternative. Since June 18, 2026 it no longer serves free or Google AI Pro/Ultra users, so it’s only an option if you have a Gemini Code Assist license or a paid API key. See Claude Code vs Gemini CLI.
