What changed in 2026

Almost every “Claude Code vs Cursor” article you’ll find was written before two changes that affect the answer:

  1. SpaceX now owns Cursor. Cursor announced on August 14, 2026 that SpaceX had completed its acquisition of Anysphere, the company behind Cursor.
  2. Cursor has new plans. Cursor is now sold through The X Subscription, one subscription for Grok, Cursor and X. The plans are Free, Plus ($8), Premium ($30), Super ($100) and Ultra ($200). The old Pro, Pro+ and Ultra plans still work for existing subscribers but aren’t offered to new customers.

The second change matters most for this comparison. Per Cursor’s models and pricing docs:

  • Paid plans include a weekly usage pool for Cursor’s own models: Grok 4.7, 4.6 and 4.5, and Composer 2.5. The pool is shared across the editor agent, the CLI, cloud agents and the Grok apps.
  • Third-party models aren’t included. Claude, GPT and Gemini are available on Premium and above at API list price, paid from prepaid credit.
  • Plus ($8) offers Cursor’s own models only: no third-party models and no own API keys.

So if Claude is the model you want, the old framing of “$20 for Claude Code vs $20 for Cursor Pro” no longer applies.

The key difference

Claude Code is an agent you hand tasks to. You describe what you want in the terminal, the VS Code or JetBrains extension, the desktop app or the browser, and it reads the codebase, edits files and runs commands. It runs Claude models only.

Cursor is an AI-first code editor. It’s a fork of VS Code with an agent built in, and it also has a CLI and cloud agents. It runs its own Grok and Composer models by default, with Claude, GPT and Gemini available at extra cost on Premium and up.

In practice:

  • If you want to stay in an editor and work alongside the AI line by line, Cursor is built for that.
  • If you want to delegate whole tasks and review the result, Claude Code is built for that.
  • If you want Claude specifically, Claude Code gives you more of it for the money.

Pricing in practice

Plan Claude Code Cursor
Free Not available Free: limited agent and chat requests
Entry Pro: $20/month ($17/month billed yearly), includes Claude Plus: $8/month ($80/year), Cursor’s own models only
Mid Max 5x: $100/month Premium: $30/month ($300/year), 4x Plus usage; Claude at API list price
High Max 20x: $200/month Super: $100/month (15x Plus); Ultra: $200/month (50x Plus); Claude at API list price
Teams Standard seat $25/user ($20 billed yearly), Premium seat $125 ($100 billed yearly) $30, $100 or $200 per seat; third-party models at API list price plus Cursor’s token rate

Prices are from the official Claude pricing and Cursor pricing pages, checked October 22, 2026.

What this means for a Claude user:

  • Claude Code Pro, $20/month: Claude usage is included, up to the plan’s limits.
  • Cursor Premium, $30/month + API costs: the $30 covers Cursor’s own models; every Claude request is billed on top at Anthropic’s API list price.
  • Cursor Plus, $8/month: no Claude at all.

What this means for someone who doesn’t mind the model: Cursor Plus at $8 is the cheapest paid plan in this comparison, as long as Grok and Composer work for you.

Who should pick which

Choose Claude Code if:

  • you want to work with Claude models without paying API prices on top of a subscription
  • you prefer delegating tasks over editing alongside the AI
  • you want the same agent in your terminal, editor, desktop app and browser

Choose Cursor if:

  • you want an AI-first editor and are comfortable with Grok and Composer for most work
  • you want the cheapest paid entry point ($8 Plus)
  • you want one usage pool shared across the editor, CLI, cloud agents and Grok, and you’re fine paying API prices when you need Claude, GPT or Gemini

Use both if: you like Cursor as your editor but want Claude for agent work. Install the Claude Code extension in Cursor: your Claude usage then comes from your Claude plan, and Cursor’s included usage covers everything else.

Frequently asked questions

Does Cursor still include Claude?

Not in the included usage. Since Cursor moved into The X Subscription, paid plans include a weekly usage pool for Cursor's own models (Grok 4.7, 4.6 and 4.5 and Composer 2.5). Claude, GPT and Gemini models are available on Premium ($30/month) and above at API list price, paid from prepaid credit. The $8 Plus plan doesn't offer third-party models at all.

Is Claude Code cheaper than Cursor?

For Claude-heavy work, usually yes. Claude Code Pro costs $20/month and includes Claude usage within its limits. In Cursor, using Claude means at least the $30 Premium plan plus the API cost of every Claude request. If you're happy with Grok and Composer, Cursor's $8 Plus plan is the cheaper way in.

Can I use Claude Code inside Cursor?

Yes. Claude Code's documentation offers an official extension install for Cursor alongside VS Code, and you can also run the Claude Code CLI in Cursor's terminal. Claude usage then comes from your Claude plan, not your Cursor plan.

Who owns Cursor now?

SpaceX. Cursor announced on August 14, 2026 that SpaceX had completed its acquisition of Anysphere, Cursor's maker. Cursor is now sold as part of The X Subscription, which bundles Grok, Cursor and X Premium.

What happened to Cursor Pro?

Pro, Pro+, Ultra and the old Teams seats are now legacy plans. They keep working for existing subscribers with their previous usage pools, but new customers choose from Free, Plus, Premium, Super, Ultra, Teams and Enterprise. Many comparisons still quote Cursor Pro at $20/month; that plan isn't sold to new customers anymore.

Is Claude Code free? Is Cursor free?

Claude Code has no free tier: it needs Claude Pro ($20/month) or higher, or an Anthropic API key. Cursor has a Free plan with limited agent and chat requests.

Which is better for large refactors?

Both can edit many files at once. Claude Code is built around delegating whole tasks to an agent in the terminal, desktop app or browser. Cursor centers on working with the agent inside the editor, and adds cloud agents on Premium and above. The deciding factor is often the model: on Cursor's included usage, refactors run on Grok and Composer unless you pay API prices for Claude.

Can Cursor use my own API key?

Not on the Plus plan. On higher plans Cursor supports your own keys, but requests still route through Cursor's servers. Claude Code can use an Anthropic API key or Claude through Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud or Microsoft Foundry.
