Windsurf isn’t called Windsurf anymore

Every top result for “Cursor vs Windsurf” was written in 2025, before both products changed hands:

  • Windsurf is now Devin Desktop. Cognition renamed the editor in June 2026. windsurf.com now redirects to devin.ai/desktop, and Windsurf’s pricing page redirects to Devin’s pricing. You get the editor through Devin’s plans.
  • Cursor is now owned by SpaceX. The acquisition closed on August 14, 2026. Cursor is sold through The X Subscription alongside Grok and X Premium.

The question is still the same, which AI editor to use, but the answer depends on the new plans more than on the old feature lists.

The key difference: what your $20–$30 buys

Devin Desktop (pricing):

  • Pro, $20/month: frontier models from OpenAI, Anthropic (Claude), Google (Gemini) and SpaceXAI, plus leading open-source models, within an increased quota.
  • Unlimited SWE-2, Cognition’s own coding model, on Pro.
  • Extra usage at API pricing. Access to Devin’s cloud agents.

Cursor (pricing):

  • Plus, $8/month: Cursor’s own models only (Grok 4.7, 4.6, 4.5 and Composer 2.5).
  • Premium, $30/month: 4x Plus usage. Claude, GPT and Gemini are available at API list price, from prepaid credit.

So for the same money, Devin Desktop includes third-party frontier models while Cursor includes its own. If you rely on Claude or GPT, that’s the main difference.

Frequently asked questions

What happened to Windsurf?

Cognition, the company behind Devin, acquired Windsurf in 2025 and renamed the editor Devin Desktop in June 2026. windsurf.com now redirects to devin.ai/desktop, and Windsurf's pricing page redirects to Devin's. The editor is sold as part of Devin's plans.

What happened to Cursor?

SpaceX completed its acquisition of Anysphere, Cursor's maker, on August 14, 2026. Cursor is now sold as part of The X Subscription, which bundles Grok, Cursor and X Premium. Included usage covers Cursor's own Grok and Composer models.

Which includes Claude?

Devin Desktop does: Devin Pro ($20/month) includes frontier models from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and SpaceXAI within its quota, and extra usage is billed at API pricing. In Cursor, Claude is available on Premium ($30/month) and above at API list price, paid from prepaid credit; the $8 Plus plan doesn't offer it.

Is Cursor or Windsurf cheaper?

Cursor has the cheapest paid plan: Plus at $8/month, limited to Cursor's own models. Both have free plans. At around $20–$30, Devin Pro ($20) includes third-party frontier models, while Cursor Premium ($30) includes Cursor's models and charges for third-party ones on top. Both top out at $200/month.

Do both have free plans?

Yes. Cursor Free includes limited agent and chat requests. Devin's Free plan includes a light agent quota, limited model availability, and unlimited inline edits and Tab completions in Devin Desktop.

Can Devin Desktop run other coding agents?

Yes. Devin Desktop runs its own Devin Local agent and can also host other agents through the Agent Client Protocol (ACP), such as Codex, Claude's agent and OpenCode. It includes an Agent Command Center for managing local and cloud agents.

Are both based on VS Code?

Yes. Cursor is a fork of VS Code, and Devin Desktop (formerly Windsurf) is also built on VS Code, so settings and most extensions carry over.
